Do I have to pay for it?
I signed up but I don't like the emails I'm getting. How do I unsubscribe?
I don't have time to subscribe to lots of newsletters. Why should I subscribe to this one?
I have a suggestion for a Playbook meditation or action. Will you include it?
A weekly email which offers subscribes a few sounds I've recorded, a meditation on a sound-related theme, and a quick and easy action to trigger greater awareness in sounds and listening.
The idea is to stream thoughts about sound and listening into themes (e.g. listening, recording as much as you can, sound walking, etc.) and to offer suggestions, questions and strategies, based on my own experiences working with sound, to build a thought library dedicated to sound.
The idea for The Sound Designer's Playbook (or 'Playbook', to give it its only slightly less pretentious-sounding moniker) came to me when browsing the the book shop inside Arnolfini gallery in Bristol, last December. I stumbled across this book, The Photographer's Playbook. It struck me as something that could be re-appropriated somehow for sound, sound design and auditory culture.
In the aftermath of this initial idea, the following questions tumbled out: 'If I did take on a Sound Designer's Playbook project, why would it exist? What would I get out of it? What would go into it?' Two months later, I still don't have complete and fully-formed answers to those questions, but I do have a feel for what I would like Playbook to be.
No, you definitely don't have to pay for it.
There should be an unsubscribe option at the bottom of you Playbook email. However, if you can't find it, it's not there, you can do either of the following:
• Send and email to: firstname.lastname@example.org with Unsubscribe Me in the subject line.
• Follow this link and tap in the email address you wish to unsubscribe.
In both cases you'll receive a further email confirming that you have been unsubscribed.
Well, first of all, you don't have to. You can access the archive online here, although that method will suit some more than others.
Second, the playbook emails only ever come out once a week. That's all. If you are interested in other things that I do or have going on and it's so exciting that I'm just bursting to tell you, I'll let you know in the regular email and you can decide for yourself whether or not it's exciting.
Thirdly, these emails are designed for people who have either a personal or professional interest in sound. To be be more specific, in the human relationship to sound. To be even more specific, with how we listen, how we make sound for performance and pleasure, and how we talk about sound. My objective is that this a conversation that is informative, inspiring and inclusive. If the above doesn't appeal to you, then these emails are probably not for you.
All comments, tips and suggestions are warmly and respectfully received ad read. However, that doesn't guarantee they'll be included in future mail outs. If you specifically do not want your contribution to be included (or your name), please indicate this when you write.
